OpenAI held its annual DevDay on September 29, and this year many of the announcements went beyond new AI models. Several updates change what ChatGPT can do after you close a conversation, how teams can work together inside ChatGPT, and where you can interact with it.
Here are the biggest announcements for everyday users and businesses.
ChatGPT Now Has an Always-On Agent Called a “Dot”
One of the biggest announcements was dots, a new type of AI agent that can keep working between your conversations with ChatGPT.
A normal ChatGPT conversation usually starts when you ask something. A dot is different. You give it an ongoing responsibility, connect the apps it needs, and decide what it’s allowed to do on its own. It gets its own cloud computer and can continue making progress even when you are not actively chatting with it. OpenAI says dots are powered by GPT-6 Astra, the most powerful model OpenAI has released up to this day.
For example, you might give a dot responsibility to help organize an upcoming company event. It could keep track of planning documents, check connected tools for changes, work through assigned tasks, and return when it needs your input or has something ready for review.
Dots are gradually rolling out to eligible Pro and Business Premium users. Enterprise access is currently in beta, and availability varies by region.

ChatGPT is Becoming a Shared Workspace for Teams
OpenAI also announced several features aimed at moving more team projects into ChatGPT.
ChatGPT Space gives people and AI agents a shared place for files, project information, and work. Pages are editable documents that people and ChatGPT can work on together. OpenAI is also adding Teams, which let groups of coworkers share Spaces, Pages, and recurring tasks.
A marketing team, for example, could have a Space for a product launch containing research, campaign plans, meeting notes, and drafts. Team members would work from the same information instead of repeatedly uploading documents or explaining the project in separate conversations.
Teams can also create team tasks. These are jobs that ChatGPT runs automatically on a schedule or when something happens in a connected app. A team could ask ChatGPT to prepare a weekly project update, monitor an approved Slack channel for certain activity, or create a recurring research brief. The task continues to belong to the team, so another person can manage it if the original creator is unavailable.
Teams and team tasks are available for ChatGPT Business and Enterprise workspaces, subject to workspace permissions.
